Self-esteem in the workplace

I had no idea that self-esteem played such an important role in the work place until I read chapter 5. The feeling of being useful and worthwhile effects one’s job satisfaction, productivity and most importantly their happiness. Self-esteem has been “measured by having survey respondent indicate their agreement or disagreement with both positive and negative statements.” (125, Organizational Behavior) People who disagree with the negative statements and agree with the positive ones have high self –esteem. People with low self-esteem often have health problems, are vulnerable to depression and have problems with social relationships. Employment has been said to “define who we are” and being employed is a huge self-esteem booster. This makes perfect sense, with a job comes a feeling of being wanted, the feeling of accomplishing tasks and a feeling of belonging.
I did some more research on self-esteem in the work place and found ways to help raise one’s self-esteem. The number one message was to take on meaningful roles in life. Doing work that is meaningful makes you feel useful. Also, it is important to make time for your passion. Set aside time everyday to do the things you love, whether it is exercise or gardening. Self-esteem is more important than many think and it is essential to make it a priority to have a healthy level of it.

  1. I agree, I never really thought about how self-esteem takes such an important role in the work place. I think it is very important to have your employees to feel wanted and have a positive attitude. Another way to raise self-esteem as a manager within the work place is to set reasonable goals for each employee to achieve. This is important because when they reach their goal they feel satisfied, which boost their level of self-esteem.

  2. Self-esteem is very important, because it enables you to perform at work.
You cannot be at ease in your work if you are not at ease in your personnal life I think. So it is important to have a great value congruence, to have a good commitment between your values and your job. And it is also important to feel at ease to have a balanced family life: to spend time with your children, your friends...
You must work for living and not live for working!

  3. Self-esteem, or self-worth, is a critical factor in life. I very much agree that having a positive self-esteem gives people confidence, and allows them to excel in their endeavors. Focusing on your passions, enjoying life, and maintaining your personal values will help keep you happy, and boost self-esteem in various ways. There is no one way to go about it, but by knowing yourself, and trying to boost your self-worth, it can help one to find the path to personal happiness and success.

  4. i agree it does feel good knowing that your doing you job at work and being applauded for it. Its horrible to find out that your not doing a great job and for some it might motivate them to work harder or it might just cause the person to give up and quit
